Gautam Gambhir-Morne Morkel's rift comes to light in BCCI meeting
What's the story
Tensions between Team India's head coach Gautam Gambhir and bowling coach Morne Morkel have surfaced after a recent Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) review meeting.
The meeting was called to discuss the team's performance in the Border-Gavaskar series in Australia.
According to Times of India, Gambhir publicly chastised Morkel for his tardiness at a training session, an incident that affected Morkel's demeanor throughout the tour.
Coach's reaction
Gambhir's disciplinary action impacts Morkel
Reportedly, Morkel was late for a practice session because of a personal meeting, which resulted in Gambhir's public reprimand.
A BCCI source told TOI, "Gambhir is very strict about discipline. He reprimanded Morkel immediately at the ground."
The incident had a deep impact on Morkel, who became visibly more reserved for the rest of the campaign.
Staff evaluation
BCCI's scrutiny extends to other support staff
The BCCI review meeting also raised concerns over the contributions of assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate.
Their roles are being questioned in light of India's recent performance issues, including repeated dismissals and collapses.
The board is especially skeptical of Nayar's ability to bring fresh ideas to the table, while Doeschate's lack of Test experience is also under the scanner.
Coach's stance
Gambhir's support for his staff under question
Upon his appointment as head coach, Gambhir had vouched for his current support staff members.
Despite BCCI's usual reluctance to make overseas appointments, he successfully advocated for his former colleagues.
However, six months into his tenure, India's performance has been disappointing with Test series losses against New Zealand and Australia besides a bilateral ODI series defeat in Sri Lanka.
