A look at the best India vs WI Test matches
The Indian cricket team is gearing up for the second and final Test against West Indies, starting Friday, August 30. India have already won the first Test to take a 1-0 lead. A win in the second Test will see them lift the trophy. Ahead of the second Test, we look at the best matches between the two nations.
2nd Test Port-of- Spain, March 6-10, 1971
It was the first time that India enforced a follow on in the first Test at Kingston. This was a landmark victory for the Indians and it was built round the spin bowlers, who captured 17 wickets. Dilip Sardesai (112) and Sunil Gavaskar (twin fifties) added the gloss. The victory came under the captaincy of Ajit Wadekar. West Indies lost by seven wickets.
2nd Test Kanpur, 1958-59 series
West Indies thrashed India 3-0 in the five-match series in 1958-59. The second Test at Kanpur saw both teams scoring 222 runs each. The visitors rode on 198 runs of legend Gary Sobers in the second innings. WI scored 443 runs and India were bundled out for just 240 during the chase. Wes Hall picked up five wickets to deny the hosts.
5th Test Kingston, May 18-22, 2002
The five-match Test series was tied at 1-1 and it all depended on the final match at Kingston. WI powered to 422/10 in the first innings after the top three scored at will. India faltered to be bowled out for 212. VVS Laxman scored 65. The visitors rallied back to dismiss WI for 197. However, India were shot down for 252 and eventually lost.
1st Test Antigua, July 21-25, 2016
India's premier off-spinner R Ashwin showed his special liking for Windies during the 2016 tour. India won the four-match Test series by a 2-0 margin. In the first Test, India thrashed WI by an innings and 92 runs. Virat Kohli (200) and Ashwin (113) powered India to 566/8. Windies were bowled out for 243 and 221. Ashwin (7/83) shined in the second innings.
