ICC Champions Trophy 2025: Big records that can be scripted
What's the story
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will kick off on February 19 with Pakistan taking on New Zealand in the opening match.
The tournament will comprise eight teams, split into two groups. Four of these will make it to the semi-finals.
A number of players are on the verge of breaking some major records in this tournament.
Here's looking at some big records that can be broken in the competition.
Record chase
Rohit Sharma's pursuit of multiple records
Indian skipper Rohit Sharma is on the cusp of breaching the 11,000-run mark in ODIs.
He needs just 12 runs to become the fourth Indian to achieve the milestone.
He is also one century away from completing a total of 50 international centuries.
If he succeeds, he will be only the 10th batter to do so.
Kohli's quest
Virat Kohli's quest for 14,000 ODI runs
Indian cricket star Virat Kohli is on the verge of completing 14,000 runs in ODIs. He needs just 37 runs to achieve the feat.
If he succeeds, he will become only the third batter in world cricket to do so after Sachin Tendulkar and Kumar Sangakkara.
Kohli (27,381) is also on the verge of completing 27,500 runs in international cricket.
Kohli (297) can also become the seventh Indian to play over 300 ODIs.
DYK
Rohit, Kohli can script these feats
Both Rohit and Kohli own five 50-plus scores apiece in CT history.
If one of them breaches the mark at least twice in this edition, he will become the batter with the most 50-plus scores in the competition's history.
Interestingly, the Indian trio of Shikhar Dhawan, Sourav Ganguly, and Rahul Dravid share the top spot on this list with six such scores apiece.
Shami
200 ODI wickets loading for Shami
Indian pacer Mohammed Shami is three wickets away from claiming his 200th scalp in ODIs.
If he does, he will be the eighth Indian bowler with over 200 wickets.
Moreover, if Shami gets the milestone in India's opener, he would become the joint-second-fastest to get the mark.
The pacer, who has played 103 matches so far, will join Pakistan legend Saqlain Mushtaq.
Williamson
Kane Williamson set to script history
Kane Williamson, New Zealand's leading run-getter in international cricket, can become the first batter from his country to complete 19,000 international runs.
His current tally stands at 18,886 runs.
Williamson (7035) can also go past the likes of Nathan Astle (7,090) and Martin Guptill (7,346) to become NZ's third-highest run-getter in ODIs.
Root
Will Root go past Morgan?
Joe Root (6,634) has a golden chance of going past Eoin Morgan (6,957) to become England's highest run-getter in ODI cricket.
Meanwhile, England captain Jos Buttler (5,114) can go past Ian Bell (5,416) to take the third spot on this list.
The former's tally of 170 sixes is the second-most for a designated keeper in ODIs. He is only behind Indian legend MS Dhoni (229).
