FA Cup 2018-19: Records broken in the third round
The third round of the FA Cup was an intense affair with teams from all tiers of English football facing each other in do-or-die matches. While most top Premier League sides like Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, and Chelsea managed to win their respective matches, only Liverpool lost theirs. Here're all the records broken.
Manchester United defeated Reading with a scoreline of 2-0
United have remained undefeated in their last 52 games against sides from the lower divisions in the FA Cup, only losing to Leeds in 2010. United have now won five straight matches under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, equaling their winning run of January 2018. Reading have remained winless in their last 17 matches against United in all competitions, losing the last six consecutive matches.
Manchester City put seven goals past Rotherham
Guardiola's men rained down goals upon Rotherham and did not give the second division team even a chance to fight. Manchester City managed to score seven goals in the FA Cup for the first time since 1968, when they had scored seven past Reading. İlkay Gündoğan became the first EPL player to provide four assists in a single fixture, since Santi Cazorla did so for Arsenal against Wigan in 2013.
Tottenham Hotspur breezed past Tranmere Rovers, won 0-7 away
The win was Tottenham's biggest since 2009 when they managed to defeat Wigan Athletic with a scoreline of 9-1 in the Premier League. It's also their biggest in the FA Cup since their 13-2 victory against Crewe since February 1960. Heung-Min Son has now managed to be involved in 12 goals in his last six Tottenham appearances in any competition.
Arsenal managed to get a 0-3 victory against Blackpool
Joe Willock and Alex Iwobi helped Arsenal secure progress to the fourth round of the competition. Willock became the youngest player at 19 years and 138 days to score an FA Cup goal for Arsenal since 2010, when Aaron Ramsey, aged 19 years 8 days, had scored against West Ham. Arsenal were defeated in the third round last season by Nottingham Forest
Wolverhampton managed to win 2-1 against Liverpool
In their last eight FA Cup matches against EPL opponents, Liverpool have been defeated six times. Liverpool have been eliminated by Wolves five times in the FA Cup; only Stoke City have eliminated them more times (6). Since Kenneth Miller's goal in 2004, Jiménez's goal was the first time Wolves scored against Liverpool at home. Shaqiri has been on the losing side in all four of his FA Cup appearances.
