Ind vs SL: Shikhar Dhawan's fastest century and other records
On Sunday, India cruised to a big win against Sri Lanka in the first ODI of the five-match series. A good performance by the spinners helped India restrict the Lankans to a paltry score of 216. Then, Shikhar Dhawan scored a spectacular century while Virat Kohli also played his part in the chase. Here are some of the records broken in this match.
Dhawan's 132* highest-score by an Indian while chasing in SL
Dhawan's knock of 132 not out off just 90 balls is the highest score by any Indian while chasing in Sri Lanka. The previous best was Virat Kohli's 128* in Colombo when India defeated Sri Lanka by 6 wickets in 2012. This was also Dhawan's second best individual score in ODIs, behind his 137 against South Africa at MCG in 2015 World Cup.
India's biggest ever win in terms of balls left
India won the match with 127 balls left to play. This was India's biggest-ever win in terms of balls left while chasing a total of over 200 runs. India's previous best, in terms of balls remaining, was 117 against England at Edgbaston in 2014. This was also the fourth-highest win overall, while chasing over 200 runs.
Partnership between Dhawan and Kohli
The 197-run partnership between Dhawan and Kohli is the highest 2nd wicket-partnership for any team in Sri Lanka. The previous best, also held by India, was the 188-run partnership between Gambhir and Dhoni at the Premadasa Stadium.
Sri Lankan fans hold up team bus after defeat
Some of the Lankan fans held up the national cricket team's team bus after the humiliating loss in Dambulla on Sunday evening. They were understandably unhappy with the Lankan team's consistent poor performances, including a defeat to Zimbabwe in the ODI series.
Rohit's horror show continues, Dhawan and Kohli superb
Rohit Sharma's scores in his last 10 ODIs in Sri Lanka read: 4, 0, 11, 5, 5, 0, 0, 4, 4, 4. Dhawan's century, which came off just 71 balls, was his fastest ODI hundred surpassing his previous record of 73 balls. In the last 12 months, Kohli's scores in successful run chases read: 85*, 154*, 122, 76*, 96*, 111*, 82*.
Kohli breaks yet another record
Kohli has now scored 4000+ runs in successful run chases in ODIs. He is only the third batsmen after Sachin Tendulkar and Ricky Ponting to achieve this feat. The cherry on the top is Kohli's 100+ average in successful chases with 16 hundreds.
