Why is FA's Chief being handed a huge retirement bonus?
Richard Scudamore, FA's Executive Chairman, is leaving his position in January. He will be replaced by the current Global President of Discovery's Animal Planet, Susanna Dinnage. It was revealed that to honor him and his contributions to English football, the FA wants to give him a bonus of £5 million. However, now it has come to light the reason might be something else altogether.
Clubs were agitated about having to pay for the bonus
Chelsea Chairman, Bruce Buck, had proposed that all 20 clubs of the Premier League should contribute £250,000 each so that the £5 million bonus can be given to Scudamore. It came to the fore that many clubs did not want to pay that sum because apparently Scudamore has already received millions in salary, this year. However, they have been pacified with an interesting reason.
What was the reason given to the clubs?
The clubs were told that the money was being given to Scudamore to prevent him from joining other leagues, which can give stiff competition to EPL in terms of television deals. As of now, the EPL has the highest-valued television rights among all annual tournaments in the world. And, Scudamore helped achieve this through his contacts in Sky Sports.
Football no longer fan-friendly?
While fans struggle to adjust with the increasing price of Premier League tickets, the FA seems to be only interested in making money and sucking fans and poorer clubs dry in all ways possible. There is a huge disparity in capital available to top clubs like Manchester United, Manchester City and others, and there is no reason why a multi-millionaire should be paid more.
