Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring in the shootout before Alexander Sorloth made it 1-1. Jude Bellingham scored next to make it 2-1.
Former Manchester City forward Alvarez then stepped up to take Atletico's second and slipped while taking it.
However, the ball ended up in the back of the net. Despite being initially given, the successful spot-kick was subsequently ruled out by VAR with Alvarez having been deemed to have touched the ball twice as he struck his effort.

This was a brilliant defensive display from Atletico for the majority of the match to limit Carlo Ancelotti's Real to few chances.
It was a magical start when England international Gallagher stabbed in following a rapid Atletico attack down the right from Alvarez's assist. The former became the first Englishman to score in a Madrid derby.
Alvarez had a solid game and was denied three times by Real keeper Thibaut Courtois.

Late in the 2nd half with 20 minutes to go, Mbappe won a penalty as he was brought down inside the box by Clement Lenglet. Vinicius Junior stepped up with the chance to put Real ahead in the tie, but the Brazilian smashed his effort well over the bar.
