IPL: Which team has played most matches?
Royal Challengers Bengaluru are set to face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) reverse fixture at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. This marks the 250th encounter for the Bengaluru-based franchise in the IPL. Notably, Mumbai Indians are the only side other than RCB to feature in 250+ IPL encounters. Here are the sides with most IPL appearances.
Mumbai Indians: 255 matches
MI hold the record for playing the most number of matches by a side in the IPL. They have won 141 and lost 110 IPL matches as of now. Notably, MI have been involved in four Super-Over encounters. MI have the joint-most IPL titles with Chennai Super Kings (5). The former won the coveted trophy in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru: 250 matches
RCB have become only the second side to feature in 250 or more IPL games. Unlike MI, the Royal Challengers are yet to win an IPL trophy. They have won 115 and lost 127 matches as of now (NR: 4). Notably, RCB have been part of three Super-Over finishes so far. They featured in IPL's first-ever encounter, against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in 2008.
Delhi Capitals: 247 matches
Delhi Capitals, who started their journey as the Delhi Daredevils, occupy the third spot on this list. With 247 appearances, the Capitals are closing in on the 250-match mark. Like the Royal Challengers, DC are yet to get their hands on IPL's silverware. As of now, the Capitals have won 109 and lost 132 IPL games (NR: 2). The tally includes 4 Super-Over matches.
Kolkata Knight Riders: 244 matches
Kolkata Knight Riders took center stage in the first-ever IPL match in Bengaluru (2008). As mentioned, the Knight Riders faced RCB and racked up 222/3, riding on Brendon McCullum's record 158*(73). Sixteen years later, KKR have played a total of 244 IPL matches. Their tally includes 124 wins and 116 defeats. Four games ended through the one-over eliminator.
