IPL: What changes should RCB make in their strategy?
What's the story
Royal Challengers Bangalore got off to a poor start in the 12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The Virat Kohli-led side were beaten by Chennai Super Kings in the opening encounter on Saturday.
RCB didn't have the answers on a slow track and put up a poor show with the bat.
So, what changes should RCB make in their strategy?
Information
RCB batsmen suffered against CSK in their opening match
RCB were bowled out for 70 runs against CSK at the Chepauk Stadium. Only Parthiv Patel managed to score in double digits as the rest of the batsmen crumbled. CSK spinners picked up eight wickets. In reply, the hosts won the match by seven wickets.
Adaptation
RCB need to adapt well
RCB haven't adapted well to changes. Back in 2016, they reached the finale but in the very next season the side flopped badly.
Their inability to improvise and transform has been visible ever since the outfield of the Chinnaswamy Stadium was re-laid to improve the ground's drainage.
Their batsmen in particular need to learn and modify their ways as per the conditions on offer.
Aggression
RCB need to curb their aggression
RCB's star-studded batting line-up may get the big scores quite often, but their aggressive approach also leads to their downfall on several ocassions.
In 2017, they were bowled out for 49 against KKR. Their tally of 70 was their joint- second lowest total in the IPL.
Their inability to read match situations better is hurting them badly.
Fewer aerial shots could aid them immensely.
Trust
RCB shouldn't press the panic button
RCB need to relax and have trust in the side they have assembled.
Rather than chopping and changing their XI, the side should go out with familiar faces and have a crack at oppositions.
The middle-order batsmen, in particular, need to change their perspective and shouldn't panic under pressure situations.
Kohli should pick their best Playing XI and give players ample opportunities to perform.
Information
RCB up against MI next
RCB's next match is at home against Mumbai Indians on Thursday. It's scheduled for a 8:00 PM start. Like RCB, Rohit Sharma-led MI lost their first match in IPL 2019. Both teams will look to avoid another defeat.
