Ravichandran Ashwin slams his second Test ton at Chepauk: Stats
India's premier spin-bowling all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin has slammed his sixth century in Test cricket. Ashwin unlocked this achievement on Day 1 of the 1st Test against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The star off-spinner played a counter-attacking and rescuing knock after India were down 144/6 in the second session. Notably, Ashwin now has two Test tons at his home ground, Chepauk.
A counter-attacking century from Ashwin
Bangladesh were on fire in the first hour after electing to field. They reduced India to 34/3. However, a productive partnership between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant avoided India's batting collapse. Jaiswal and KL Rahul then took India past 140 before India lost two more wickets. Ashwin and Ravindra paired up thereafter, with the former smashing an 58-ball half-century. Ashwin then completed his century.
Two Test tons in Chennai
As mentioned, Ashwin raced to his sixth century in Test cricket. The Indian all-rounder now has two Test centuries at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, his home ground. Notably, Ashwin has 100+ scores in his last two innings at this venue. The off-spinner also slammed a match-winning ton against England in the 2021 Test match.
A formidable 195*-run stand
Ashwin completed his century off 108 balls on Day 1. As mentioned, Ashwin and Jadeja lifted India up from 144/6. They added a 195*-run stand to get the hosts past 320. This is now the highest 7th wicket stand at Chepauk.
India's second-highest wicket-taker in Tests
Ashwin is presently India's second-highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, only behind Anil Kumble (619). The former owns 516 wickets from 100 Tests at a remarkable average of 23.75. His tally includes as many as 36 five-wicket hauls. In the ongoing series, Ashwin could surpass legend Courtney Walsh (519) and Nathan Lyon (530) in terms of Test wickets.
Most hundreds from number eight or below in Tests
As pAshwin now has the second-most centuries from number eight or below in Test cricket. He owns four centuries in this regard. The Indian all-rounder is only behind New Zealand's Daniel Vettori, who has scored five such centuries. Pakistan's Kamran Akmal and West Indies's Jason Holder have three tons each batting at number eight or below in the longest format.
