Ravi Shastri recalls India's back-to-back Test series wins in Australia
Ravi Shastri, the former head coach of the Indian cricket team, has expressed his admiration for India's consecutive Test series victories in Australia during 2018/19 and 2020/21. Notably, Shastri was India's head coach on both these tours. He equated these achievements to defeating the West Indies in their prime during the 1980s. Prior to these triumphs, India had never won a Test series on Australian soil.
Shastri highlights significance of victories in global cricket
Shastri emphasized the global significance of these victories in a conversation with Mid Day. He stated, "People talk about World Cups, but if you go and ask people who follow the game all around the world, they will always think of those [2018-19 and 2020-21] series in Australia." He further added that winning back-to-back series in Australia captures the imagination of people worldwide.
Shastri ranks BGT wins above personal accolades
Shastri also compared the two Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) victories to his personal achievements during his playing career. Despite being part of the 1983 World Cup-winning team and a World Championship of Cricket-winning side in 1985, he considers these BGT triumphs as the pinnacle of his career. "It [Border-Gavaskar] might not be the World Cup trophy but it's the biggest in my career," Shastri stated.
Can India register a hat-trick?
Meanwhile, the upcoming Border-Gavaskar series is scheduled to commence in November Down Under. A total of five matches will be played in what is being said a high-voltage series. Notably, Australia last beat India in a Test series in the 2014/15 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (2-0). The Indian team will have a chance to register their third successive Test series triumph Down Under.
