Sports Minister rules out possibility of India hosting big tournaments
Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore has quashed out the possibility of India hosting any big sports tournament in the foreseeable future. Rathore made it clear that the focus right now is to build small practical play fields. He doesn't want to invest money in building mammoth stadiums, which will be required to host international events.
Sports Ministry says any mega event will not be beneficial
The Sports Minister also clarified that India has no plans to bid for the hosting rights of the 2032 Olympics. He claimed that hosting such a mega-event would not be beneficial for the country. These statements come just days before International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach's scheduled visit to India. Thomas Bach will be in India from April 18 till 20.
'India unlikely to host any big tournaments'
"The bottom line for doing anything, taking such decisions, the bottom line needs to be what good is that tournament going to be for our country? Is it going to be beneficial for us?" Sports Minister said.
Bidding for 2032 Olympic Games is a lengthy process
The 2024 Olympics will be hosted by France and will take place in Paris, while the United State of America will host the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The bidding process for the 2032 games is years away and the winner will only be declared in 2025. However, it takes years to prepare and submit the proposal to the International Olympic Council.
