Afghanistan skipper frustrated with his team: Details here
Afghanistan suffered another loss in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019. The defeat against Bangladesh on Monday was their seventh successive one in this edition of the tournament. Before the World Cup started, a lot was expected out of spin sensation Rashid Khan, but the spinner has endured a poor campaign. In the same light, skipper Gulbadin Naib spoke about the spinner's performance.
Rashid has been woeful with the ball
Rashid was backed to light up the ICC World Cup 2019 campaign for his team. But the leg-spinner has been a mere shadow of himself. In seven matches, Rashid has taken only four scalps, whereas, he has leaked runs aplenty. Against England, he conceded 110 runs which is the most in the history of tournament. His poor show has hurt the Afghans.
Gulbadin highlights why Rashid has missed the momentum
"He is giving his 100 percent. But he is disappointed with the fielding. One time he got very angry...I asked him to relax and just focus on your bowling. So I think he missed his momentum there because of fielding," said Gulbadin about Rashid.
Fielding has been a major worry for Afghanistan
Afghanistan have been poor on the field this term. In almost every match, they have been guilty of spurning chances. From dropping catches to allowing easy runs, the Afghans have been awful. Rashid, who is generally a strong fielder, has often times shown his displeasure on the field, which Gulbadin feels led to the former losing momentum with the ball.
Rashid was terrific prior to the World Cup
Rashid has been one of the best in business in recent years. He also helped Afghanistan qualify for the 2019 World Cup as he guided them to win the Qualifiers trophy. He came into the World Cup with a strong frame of mind after excelling in the 12th edition of the Indian Premier League. But things have gone awry for the promising spinner.
World Cup 2019 will help Rashid correct his mistakes
With 129 ODI scalps and 75 T20I wickets, Rashid is a genuine match-winner. But this tournament has been a real test for him, playing against quality sides in the 50-over format. The T20 ace needs to find a way in order to script success in ODIs as well. Perhaps, this World Cup will help him overcome his mistakes.
Afghanistan need more exposure against top sides
Both Afghanistan's batting and fielding need major improvement. Playing against the best regularly, away from home, will help them massively. The side has the passion to succeed, but exposure is something that Naib's side deserves.
