Ranji Trophy 2019-20 semi-finals, final to have DRS
The Decision Review System (DRS) is set to make its debut in the ongoing Ranji Trophy season. The forthcoming semi-finals and final of the Ranji Trophy will have provisions for DRS reviews. The technology will be used to review umpiring decisions in India's First-Class competition. However, there are some notable changes on offer. Here's more on the same.
Teams to get four referrals per innings
Generally, we have two reviews per team innings in the longest format. However, here we will see teams being given a maximum of four referrals in an innings. According to Cricbuzz, where a request for a player review results in the original on-field decision being reversed, then the Player Review shall be categorised as successful and shall not count towards the innings limit.
Limited use of DRS in Ranji Trophy semis, final
There will be a "limited use" of DRS, with no snicko, hot-spot, and the ball-tracker on offer. Instead, one will see the third umpire having a slow-motion camera and a pitch map along with spin vision to assist him. This is mainly with the idea being that at least the 'howlers' can be prevented.
'We want to bring uniformity for all the teams'
Saurashtra are set to face Gujarat in the semi-final. It's Saurashtra's sixth appearance in the Ranji semi-finals. The other semi-final will be played between Karnataka and Bengal. Speaking to IANS last week, GM Cricket Operations Saba Karim said, "We want to bring uniformity for all the teams. That's why we are trying to initiate it from the semi-finals."
'BCCI should implement DRS across important domestic tournaments'
"I welcome the decision of having DRS in Ranji Trophy. The BCCI should use DRS for the semi-finals and finals of all its important tournaments like the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy," said Saurashtra Cricket Association President Jaydev Shah.
