Ramesh Powar is new coach of Indian women's cricket team
After a lot of speculations, Ramesh Powar has been appointed as the new head coach of the Indian women's cricket team. Earlier, he was named the interim coach after the resignation of Tushar Arothe. Powar will be the coach till the ICC T20 World Cup, which is set to be hosted by the West Indies in November. Here are further details.
Why did Tushar Arothe quit the job?
Reportedly, Tushar Arothe, the previous coach of the Indian women's team, had quit his position after having a difference of opinion with senior members of the team. The problems arose after the Indian team failed to succeed in the Asia Cup in Kuala Lumpur in May 2018. Notably, India had reached the final of the World Cup in 2017 under Arothe.
Ramesh Powar's qualifications as coach
Ramesh Powar has featured in 2 Tests and 31 ODIs for India. He has had no previous coaching experience before taking charge of the Indian women's team. However, he has recently returned from Australia after completing a Level III course in coaching. The women's team underwent a camp under him at the National Cricket Academy. The Indian eves will tour Sri Lanka in September.
The team's recent performances
After losing to England in the final of the ICC Women's World Cup, the Indian team has been performing steadily. They defeated South Africa in ODIs and T20Is away from home in February. However, they failed to qualify for the final of the tri-nation series at home involving England and Australia. India were defeated in the final of the T20 Asia Cup by Bangladesh.
