Decoding the incredible records of Rafael Nadal on clay courts
Spanish maestro Rafael Nadal won a record-breaking 21st Grand Slam title in January. He broke a tie with Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer after winning the 2022 Australian Open. Nadal, who is famously known as the King of Clay, will vie for his 14th French Open title this year. Here, we take a look at his incredible records on clay courts.
Why does this story matter?
Nadal is one of the most prolific tennis players in men's singles. Over the years, the 35-year-old has ruled the roost on clay courts. In August 2021, Nadal became the first-ever player in the Open Era to win at least 450 matches on two surfaces, clay and hard. He suffered only his third defeat at Roland Garros last year.
Longest winning streak on clay courts
Nadal has the longest winning streak on clay courts in men's singles (Open Era). He won 81 consecutive matches on this surface between April 2005 and May 2007. Nadal also holds the record for most clay-court titles in the Open Era (62). The likes of Guillermo Vilas (49) and Thomas Muster (40) follow the Spaniard on this tally.
Third-most wins on clay courts
Nadal has a win-loss record of 464-43 on clay courts. He has the third-most wins on this surface (men's singles) after Vilas (681-173) and Manuel Orantes (569-170). Nadal is one of the five men to have claimed 400 or more clay-court wins.

Over a decade after winning his maiden Grand Slam title, Nadal owns a total of 13 French Open honors. The Spaniard has won seven more titles than second-placed Bjorn Borg (Open Era).
