R Sridhar reveals challenges in coaching Rishabh Pant
R Sridhar, who served as the Indian cricket team's fielding coach from the year 2014 to 2021, has shared his experiences of working with various players. He singled out wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant as the most challenging to connect with. This revelation was made during an interview on 'Anubhav Talks.' Pant, known for his unconventional yet dependable batting style, made his debut for India in 2017.
Sridhar's coaching approach and initial struggles with Pant
Sridhar emphasized the importance of adapting coaching styles to suit individual athletes. He stated, "It's a simple coaching philosophy. If they don't learn the way you coach, coach the way they learn." The former fielding coach admitted that he initially struggled to connect with Pant due to their differing approaches. "With Rishabh Pant this was an example because he was a young kid...it was difficult for me to connect with him initially," Sridhar revealed.
Sridhar's strategy to build trust with Pant
Sridhar discussed the challenges he faced in coaching Pant, stating that it took time for them to build trust. He had to modify his coaching style and understand Pant's perspective. "It was a challenge because he had his ways, so you let it be," Sridhar said about Pant's unique approach. Despite these initial difficulties, the two managed to develop a mutual understanding over time.
Sridhar's coaching style adjustment for Pant
Sridhar further explained his coaching philosophy, stating that he had to adjust his style specifically for Pant. "Usually more is less, but with an athlete like Rishabh, less is more," Sridhar said. He emphasized that at an elite level, technical aspects are often best left to the players themselves as they are experts in their field. This approach proved successful in their case.
Sridhar's reflections on Pant's journey and comeback
Sridhar reflected on Pant's journey, particularly his comeback after a near-fatal car accident in December 2022. The incident had kept Pant off the field for more than a year. However, he made a successful return in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season and was also selected for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Sridhar expressed his joy at seeing Pant back in action, stating that he is now a "better version; he is wiser."
