#GamingBytes: PUBG director steps down, gears up for new project
PUBG designer and director, Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene has contributed more than his share in changing the way we play games. Two weeks ago, he announced a new venture called PUBG Special Projects and in a recent interview, Greene talked about his plans for the future and upcoming games. Here's how Greene plans to 'get his hands dirty' and search for something new and exciting.
Who is Brendan Greene?
Also known as PlayerUnknown, Greene was originally a web designer and photographer. The Irish born Brazil dweller learned game designing later in his career and with a Korean developer, Chang Hang Kim, created the Battle Royale title, PUBG. Until recently, he was busy promoting PUBG and going to various gaming events. He is now leading a small team in search of new ideas.
Stepping down as director, Greene moves from Seoul to Amsterdam
The new role will focus on exploring new ideas and "dreaming of interesting things." "I've been looking at things from a high-level position rather than getting my hands dirty," Greene said. The new position also gives him a location change, with him moving from Seoul to Amsterdam. Notably, he has been given free rein to find and explore new ideas.
What is the reason for this shift?
Creative minds rarely remain at one place for a long time. The competitors have also been gaining popularity day-by-day with innovative additions to the Battle Royale formula. Greene aims to build a culture. "That's why we have Special Projects...It's challenging, but it's just fun. To get up in the morning, go to work, and dream is something most people dream about," he said.
Which games does the PlayerUnknown play?
Greene is a big fan of Battlefield 1 and wishes to play Celeste and the latest God of War. Talking about games, he said, "Games like [Inside] really inspire me to think about how I can apply that to a realistic game. I tend not to play too many games in the genre I'm thinking about because I don't want to be unduly influenced."
Greene will 'remain as consulting creative director on PUBG'
While Greene is now leading a different team, he will still be attached with PUBG. "While I'll remain as consulting creative director on PUBG, development will be led by Taeseok Jang and the fantastic team I have had the honour of working with over the past three years." he tweeted. As for PUBG, a remaster of its first map is on the way!
