PSG now joint-holders of the longest winning-streak in European leagues
With the win over Marseille, Paris Saint-Germain now have 11 victories in Ligue 1 in 2018/19, thus equaling the longest winning streak, at the start of the season, across top five European leagues. They have matched the record set by Tottenham Hotspur in 1960-61. A goal from substitute Kylian Mbappe followed by another strike from Julian Draxler sealed the deal for PSG. Details follow.
Mbappe was benched because of late arrival
The approach of Thomas Tuchel is appreciable, as he did not spare Paris Saint-Germain's hottest property, Kylian Mbappe, from punishment when he arrived late for the pre-match team talk. As a result of his late arrival, Mbappe was benched and Eric-Maxim was deployed as the striker. However, it was Mbappe who scored the first goal when Eric-Maxim was substituted for him.
PSG have not performed well in the Champions League
Though PSG have achieved this historic winning streak, their brilliant form in the Ligue 1 has seen no reflection in their Champions League endeavors. They have lost, drawn, and won, the three UCL matches they have played till now. They sit third in their group with four points and are behind Liverpool (6) and Napoli (5).
History of Le Classique: How did the epic rivalry originate?
Marseille vs PSG is considered the biggest rivalry in French football, with Marseille being the representative of the south and Paris of the north of France. Marseille were the better side till 1986 when PSG won their first championship. The rivalry kicked off when a politician was made Marseille's President and Canal+ bought PSG. However, now PSG is way more successful than their rivals.
