Prithvi Shaw on track to return for Mumbai following suspension
Highly-rated young Indian opener Prithvi Shaw is in line to return for Mumbai, a day after his suspension ends. Shaw, who was suspended for a doping violation, will have his suspension end on November 15, as he eyes a return during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. He was handed an eight-month suspension on July 30 for the consumption of a prohibited substance. Here's more.
Shaw suspended for consuming banned substance found in cough syrups
According to a statement by the BCCI, Shaw had "inadvertently ingested a prohibited substance, which can be commonly found in cough syrups". He tested positive for Terbutaline. As a result, he was handed a backdated suspension, which would get over on November 15.
Milind Rege confident of Shaw being considered for selection
As far as his selection for the Mumbai squad goes, former Mumbai skipper Milind Rege expressed his confidence on the former being selected. "I can't make any commitment to whether he will be back, but we will certainly discuss his selection. He is doing the right things. Physically he is fit," Rege quoted to ESPNCricinfo.
Rege hails Shaw as a class and dynamic young batsman
Rege further praised Shaw for his classy batting and hailed him as a dynamic young batsman. "So, that will weigh heavily in his favor because he has scored runs for Mumbai, and he also did well in Test cricket till he went to Australia. There has been a gap. So, he will again have to start once again," he added.
Rege warns Shaw to be fit to retain his spot
However, Rege has warned Shaw to be physically fit, besides alerting him that his place cannot be taken for granted, as others are in the line. "Everybody needs to work for their place in the squad. There are some senior players who have done well last year and even this year but the youngsters are now really knocking hard on the door," Rege continued.
It is a tough decision to keep somebody out: Rege
"We have Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored quite heavily in Vijay Hazare Trophy. He scored a double-hundred and two hundreds in the 50-over tournament. It is a happy position for Mumbai, but as a selector, it is a tough decision to keep somebody out," concluded Rege.
Shaw looks to begin from where he left off
While it is unclear as to if Shaw would be selected for Mumbai during Syed Mushtaq, it seems likely to be a fresh start for him. However, Shaw would aim to start from where he left off and would also eye a return to the Indian Test squad. While he won't feature in the upcoming two Tests against Bangladesh, New Zealand could be next.
