Decoding successful run chases with most balls to spare (IPL)
Sunrisers Hyderabad shattered a host of records en route to their record chase against Lucknow Super Giants in Match 57 of the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL). Openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma put up a boundary-hitting exhibition as SRH accomplished the 166-run target in just 9.4 overs. Here we decode the successful chases in IPL with the most balls to spare (100+ targets).
Deccan Chargers vs Mumbai Indians - 48 balls
In 2008, the now-defunct Deccan Chargers accomplished the 155-run target against Mumbai Indians with eight overs to spare (48 balls). Adam Gilchrist, who made an unbeaten 109 off 47 balls, attacked straightaway as DC were 60/0 after six overs. His opening partner VVS Laxman (37* off 26) played the second fiddle well as MI bowlers were left utterly clueless. Both openers returned unbeaten.
Delhi Capitals vs Punjab Kings - 57 balls
Delhi Capitals comfortably achieved the 116-run target against Punjab Kings in 2022. Openers Prithvi Shaw and David Warner added 81 runs in the powerplay overs. While the former perished for 21, the Australian dasher made an unbeaten 60 off 30 balls. Sarfaraz Khan contributed with 12* runs as DC crossed the line with 57 balls to spare (119/1).
Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Lucknow Super Giants - 62 balls
SRH top this list, having chased down 166 versus LSG with 62 balls to spare. Head and Abhishek were equally destructive as the Super Giants bowlers had no place to hide. SRH scored 107/0 in the first six overs, the second-highest powerplay score in IPL history. While Head made an unbeaten 89 off 30 balls, Abhishek made his presence felt with a 28-ball 75*.
