Premier League: FA confirms winter break to be introduced
The Football Association (FA) has approved winter break for the first time in the history of Premier League. This break would be implemented from the 2019-20 season. Unlike other leagues in Europe, the Premier League will not have an entire two-week break. Instead there will be a 'mid-season player break'. Here is more about the decision by the FA.
Break to be split over two-week period
The break will take place in February from 2019/20 season. However, all teams will not have their off at the same time. 10 teams will sit out the first weekend with the other 10 getting their break next weekend. This way, each team will have a two-week break. The Football League will follow its normal schedule.
Breaks across other leagues in European football
The league in Germany (Bundesliga) has the most days off during the winter break. The number of days differ every year. Ligue 1 is next with La Liga and Serie A following suit. These leagues have a break during festive period unlike EPL.
Premier League to lay conditions for clubs during the break
The Football Association described this decision as a significant move. FA chief executive Martin Glenn said that the board finally found a solution after working on the changes since a few years now. Meanwhile, Premier League boss Richard Scudamore stated that there will be conditions for clubs during this phase. Clubs will not be allowed to play lucrative friendly matches.
Players get much needed breaks
In a recent survey by FIFPro, 90% players were questioned about winter break and they stated that the same is needed. These players said that they would like a break of two weeks. Many footballers, playing for both club and country, cited that they played too many games in a season. The new break in EPL comes as a relief for them.
