Premier League 2019-20 shouldn't be pushed beyond June, feels Kane
Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane believes the presently-suspended Premier League season should not be dragged past June. According to Kane, pushing the league would severely affect the next season and Euro 2021. England's top-flight league was earlier suspended till April 30, owing to the coronavirus pandemic. With growing concerns over the crisis, a further postponement is expected. Here is more.
Any delay after June will push back the next season
"I think, for me, we should try to finish the season. But there needs to be a point where enough is enough. Playing into July or August and pushing next season back I don't see too much benefit in that," Kane said.
The professional football season is suspended till April 30
Previously, the Premier League 2019-20 season was postponed until April 4, due to the outbreak. However, following an emergency meeting with the clubs later, it was decided that all professional football in England will remain suspended until at least April 30. The Football Association had also confirmed that the incumbent season has been extended indefinitely until its completion.
Euro 2020 was postponed to next summer
The deadly COVID-19 also led to the postponement of high-profile Euro 2020 by a year. The European Championship, which was scheduled to take place from June 12 to July 12 this year, will likely be organised from June 11 to July 11 in 2021. A number of events including Women's European Championship, European Under-21 Championships and Nations League are also slated for next summer.
A further delay will impact Euro 2021
The Premier League season was deferred following the match between Leicester City and Aston Villa on March 10. Overall, a total number of 92 Premier League matches are still to be played. "The further this season is pushed, it would have a big knock-on effect for next season, with the Euros in 2021, and even World Cup 2022. That's my opinion," Kane asserted.
