Manchester City defeat Newcastle 2-1: Match Report
Holders Manchester City are back to winning ways as they beat Newcastle 2-1 in their fourth match of 2018/19 EPL season. Kyle Walker scored a screamer, which saw City seal the tie. City were clearly the better team. Even though, Newcastle did put up a fight, they were simply outclassed by Guardiola's men. Earlier, Sterling had put City in front with his 8th-minute strike.
City were brilliant from start to finish
The defending champions were, markedly, the better team and created an early chance, which Riyad Mahrez failed to convert. However, Newcastle captain, Jamaal Lascelles, lost possession to Mendy, who then set up Sterling to put City ahead. Notably, this was Sterling's 100th EPL appearance for Manchester City. It was Walker's brilliant goal, in 52nd minute, that helped City win this home match.
Newcastle put up a commendable performance
Newcastle had faced two defeats (against Tottenham and Chelsea) and a draw (against Cardiff) before their match at the Etihad. However, they did put the defending champions under pressure when Yedlin made a brilliant 70 yard run in the 30th minute to equalize, leaving City's custodian Ederson baffled. The defeat has placed Rafa Benitez's team in the relegation zone.
What did the two managers have to say?
Guardiola admitted the defending was rather poor, in the goal that City conceded, adding, "But we did not concede one more chance against a team who live for the counter-attack. That's why our performance was quite good, especially in the second half, where we did not let them run. It was a good result." Though disappointed, Benitez added, "But the team effort was there."
