Leicester City thrash Southampton 9-0: List of records broken
Leicester City thrashed a sorry Southampton 9-0 away from home to register an outstanding victory in the 2019-20 Premier League season. With this victory, they equaled the 24-year-old record for the biggest ever EPL win. Leicester are now second in the table after hat-tricks from Jamie Vardy and Ayoze Perez. Here are the records scripted by Leicester.
Leicester City match Manchester United's record
Leicester matched Manchester United's 9-0 win against Ipswich in 1995. This was confirmed in stoppage time after Vardy's penalty in the 94th minute. The Foxes recorded the biggest ever victory by an away side in an English top-flight league match in the 131-year history of the Football League. The result also inflicted Southampton's biggest ever defeat as an English league side across competitions.
Leicester faring better than their 2015-16 title-winning campaign
The Foxes have earned 20 points from their opening 10 Premier League games this season. Interestingly, this is one more than at the same stage of their title-winning 2015-16 campaign.
Foxes equal these two unique records as well
The Foxes became only the second team in Premier League history to establish a five-goal lead in the first half of an away game in the competition. Manchester City achieved the mark against Burnley in April 2010 (also 5-0). Leicester became the second EPL side to have two players score a hat-trick in the same game after Arsenal in May 2003 against Southampton.
We were very hungry tonight, says Rodgers
"I'm very pleased to see our work rate, we scored some great goals and we were very hungry tonight. It was horrible weather but our focus was outstanding. I'm very pleased how we defended, and we were ruthless," said Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers.
