Premier League 2024-25: Key deals done on transfer deadline day
The 2024 summer transfer window shut on August 30 for the Premier League and there were several high-profile movements in terms of incomings and outgoings. From hefty deals to loan movements, several clubs got the job done. The highlights of the day were Manuel Ugarte's move to Manchester United and Raheem Sterling's loan deal to Arsenal. We decode the key signings on deadline day.
Raheem Sterling - Chelsea to Arsenal (loan)
Sterling completed a late transfer deadline day move to Arsenal. The 29-year-old Chelsea player agreed a season-long loan with Mikel Arteta's side after being told he was not in the plans of new Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca. Sterling had earlier joined Chelsea in the summer of 2022 from Manchester City. He scored 10 goals and made 8 assists last season for Chelsea (43 appearances).
Jadon Sancho - Manchester United to Chelsea (loan with obligation)
Manchester United allowed Jadon Sancho to join arch-rivals Chelsea on loan as Sterling's replacement. The deal includes an obligation for Chelsea to sign 24-year-old Sancho for a fee rising to £25m next summer. Sancho joined United in a £73m deal from Borussia Dortmund in July 2021. He fell out with Erik ten Hag last season before re-joining Dortmund on loan in January.
Ivan Toney - Brentford to Al-Ahli (£40m)
Brentford striker Ivan Toney signed for Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli. The Bees had accepted a bid in the region of £40m for the 28-year-old earlier on Friday. The move was finally confirmed in the early hours of Saturday morning. "It's been a pleasure to work with Ivan over the last four years," said Brentford boss Thomas Frank.
Manuel Ugarte - PSG to Manchester United (€60m)
Manchester United announced the signing of Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Ugarte. The Uruguayan international was deemed surplus to requirements at PSG after just one season following the arrival of Joao Neves. Ugarte joined the Red Devils for a fee worth €50m + €10m in add-ons. There is also a sell-on clause up to 10%. Defensive midfielder Ugarte was Man United's priority signing over the summer.
Scott McTominay - Manchester United to Napoli (£25.7m)
Serie A club Napoli announced the singing of Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay. The Man United academy graduate who played 255 times for the first-team, joined Antonio Conte's side for a fee of £25.7m as per BBC. The 27-year-old midfielder spent all of his career at Man United. McTominay's departure hands the club more flexibility within the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability rules.
Eddie Nketiah - Arsenal to Crystal Palace (£30m)
Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah joined Crystal Palace for a fee worth £30m. The 25-year-old signed a five-year deal with the Eagles. "It's amazing to sign for Crystal Palace - I'm excited to get going," said Nketiah. "Every time I come back to South London, it always puts a smile on my face, so it's good to be back home."
