Premier League, Chelsea beat West Ham: Records broken
Timo Werner scored a rare goal as Chelsea dished out a commendable 1-0 win over West Ham United in the Premier League 2020-21 season. With this win, Chelsea took a huge step towards securing a Champions League spot for the next season. Werner, who has struggled this season after a £47m move last summer, got the decisive goal. We present the records broken.
Chelsea get the job done against West Ham
Werner fired home from Ben Chilwell's cross after a well-worked move involving Christian Pulisic. West Ham struggled to create chances and finished the game with 10 men. Defender Fabian Balbuena was shown a straight red card in the 81st minute after catching Ben Chilwell's leg with his follow through while making a clearance. Earlier, Werner missed a glorious chance to double Chelsea's lead.
Chelsea handed boost for Champions League spot
Chelsea have moved to fourth, collecting 58 points from 33 games. They are three points above fifth-placed West Ham (55). Meanwhile, Liverpool are sixth after being held by Newcastle United at home (1-1). The Reds also have 54 points and are placed above Spurs (53). Everton, who beat Arsenal are also in the mix, collecting 52 points from 32 matches.
Chelsea manager Tuchel scripts these records
Thomas Tuchel is now unbeaten in his first 10 away games in charge across competitions. He has become the first Chelsea boss to achieve this record (W8 D2). This was Chelsea's 10th clean sheet in just their 14th Premier League match under Thomas Tuchel. As per Opta, this is the joint-quickest a manager has recorded 10 clean sheets in Premier League history.
Werner registers these records
Timo Werner scored his maiden Premier League away goal for Chelsea since netting last in the month of October against Burnley. This was his first goal in 16 away appearances for Chelsea across competitions. Werner has been directly involved in 20 goals for Chelsea this season (11 goals, 9 assists); the most of any player for the club in all competitions.
More feats for Tuchel
The Blues now have 16 clean sheets under Tuchel since he took over from Frank Lampard in January 2021. Chelsea have registered three consecutive clean sheets in all competitions. This was Tuchel's 14th league game. He enjoyed his eighth Premier League win (W8 D5 L1).
