Premier League: A look at biggest margin of wins
The English Premier League (EPL) is one of the most competitive football leagues, not just in Europe, but also in the entire world. Over the years, we have witnessed many massive clashes and several high-scoring games. After Leicester City's record-breaking 9-0 win against Southampton on Friday, here we look at the biggest margin of wins in the EPL.
Newcastle United hammer Sheffield Wednesday 8-0 at home
Newcastle United might not be a force in the EPL, but they used to be back during the 1900s. Nonetheless, while they were past their prime during 1999, a game in the same year against Sheffield Wednesday saw them plundering eight goals, while the visitors could not score any. Furthermore, it was Alan Shearer's five goals that entertained a 36,619 packed crowd.
Southampton ride on similar luck as they destroy Sunderland
It was just five years ago when Southampton rode on similar luck and pillaged eight goals to a fellow minnow club, like Sunderland, at home. While Graziano Pellè scored a brace, it is to be noted that a couple of goals came via own goal, from Santiago Vergini and Patrick van Aanholt, which were incidentally also the opening and closing goals, respectively.
Tottenham Hotspur annihilate Wigan Athletic at home
It was just nine years ago when Tottenham Hotspur created history by becoming the first club from London to score nine goals in an EPL match. Overall, they were the second team to do so, as they annihilated minnows Wigan Athletic at home, with striker Jermain Defoe raiding four goals. While Wigan did pull one back, it was nothing more than a consolation.
Southampton at the receiving end as Leicester City rock
Southampton feature in the list twice and this time they were at the receiving end. Leicester trounced them 9-0. Interestingly, this was the home game of Southampton. Nonetheless, it was Jamie Vardy and Ayoze Pérez's hat-trick that did the most damage, as the hosts failed to score even one. This was the EPL record of biggest away win too.
Andrew Cole's tornado allows Manchester United sink Ipswich Town
Contrary to the above, United became the first-ever team to score nine goals in the EPL, as they sank minnows Ipswich Town at home. The match was notable for Andrew Cole's terrorizing performance, as he ransacked the visitors with five goals, followed by Mark Hughes' brace, which left the latter demoralized, making it the biggest win in EPL history.
