Kerala government honors PR Sreejesh with Rs. 2 crore
The Kerala government has announced a cash reward of Rs. 2 crore for Indian hockey legend PR Sreejesh. This announcement was made following his retirement from the sport after an impressive performance as India's goalkeeper at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The decision to honor Sreejesh was taken during a Cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, according to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).
Sreejesh's contribution to India's historic Olympic victory
Sreejesh was a key player in the Indian hockey team that secured a bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. This victory marked India's first back-to-back Olympic medals in hockey in 52 years. The Kerala-born athlete has been an integral part of the Indian hockey team for several years, consistently showcasing exceptional skill and leadership. His performance as goalkeeper was instrumental in India clinching its second consecutive bronze medal at the Olympics.
Sreejesh's new role and triumphant return to Kerala
Following his retirement, Sreejesh is set to become head coach of the junior men's team after the 2024 Olympics. He plans to spend the next two to three months mentally preparing for this new role. After his successful Olympics campaign in Paris, Sreejesh returned home to Kerala where he was greeted with a grand welcome at Kochi airport on August 16.

Sreejesh's first assignment as the head coach of the junior men's hockey team is expected to be the Sultan Of Johor Cup, scheduled for October this year. Sreejesh retires on a high
Sreejesh finished his career with two bronze medals at the Olympics (2020 and 2024). He also led India to the quarter-finals at the 2016 Olympics. Sreejesh is also a three-time Asian Games medalist (2 golds, 1 bronze) and a two-time Commonwealth Games silver medalist. He won five Asian Champions Trophy medals, one Asia Cup medal and two Champions Trophy medals. He had a long career and played 336 matches for India.
