PM Modi to meet India's Rio Olympics contingent
In an attempt to boost the confidence of the athletes, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to meet India's Rio Olympics contingent. The meeting is scheduled to take place on 4th July at Manekshaw Centre in Delhi. India's chef-de-mission for Rio Olympics, Mr. Rakesh Gupta confirmed the news stating that they did receive a mail from the Sports Ministry about the same.
2016 Rio Olympics
The 2016 Summer Olympics, generally referred as Rio 2016, is an international multisport event in tradition of the Olympic games. Rio 2016 will be the 28th edition of the summer Olympics. The games will take place in Rio de Jeneiro, Brazil from 5-21 August 2016. More than 10,000 participants from 207 countries would participate in 28 different sports, competing for 306 sets of medals.
India to send largest ever contingent for Olympics
India would send a strong contingent of 103 sportsperson for the upcoming Rio Olympics. India expects more athletes to qualify for the 2016 Olympics contingent before the qualification period ends. In the 2012 Olympics in London, India had sent 83 member squad for the games. However, this time, India would miss its star athletes Vijender Singh, Sushil Kumar and MC Mary Kom among others.
Seventh Olympics for Leander Paes
Tennis player Leander Paes is all set to play his 7th Olympic games this year, making him the first Indian and the only tennis player to have achieved this mark. Paes had won a bronze medal in men's singles event in 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
Sushil Kumar approached Delhi High Court
Wrestling champion Sushil Kumar moved to the Delhi High Court after the Wrestling Federation of India denied his request to hold a trial between Narsingh Yadav and him for selection in the upcoming Rio Olympics. The Delhi High Court dismissed his plea, confirming Yadav's selection in the 74-kg wrestling category. Earlier, Sushil Kumar had missed the selection trials due to a shoulder injury.
Dutee Chand made history
Dutee Chand made a history after qualifying for women's 100 meter event in the upcoming Rio Olympics. She became the first Indian woman athlete to have achieved this success.
