Even a decade after his retirement in March 2015, his record remains unbroken.
Notably, Jayawardene is also the most successful fielder in international cricket with a phenomenal 440 catches.

Apart from his ODI record, Ponting also took 196 catches in Test cricket and eight in T20Is, taking his overall international catch tally to 364.

Virat Kohli occupies the third spot on this list with 158 catches in ODIs.
He broke Azharuddin's record during the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy encounter against arch-rivals Pakistan in Dubai.
With this, he became India's most successful fielder in terms of catches taken in ODIs.
Kohli has a total of 333 catches in international cricket, further solidifying his legacy as one of the finest fielders.

Mohammad Azharuddin, the former Indian captain, is fourth on the list with 156 catches in ODIs.
He was the first player in ODI history to breach the 150-catch milestone, a feat he accomplished toward the end of his career.
In his 334-match ODI career, Azharuddin emerged among the few fielders to take four catches in a single ODI innings.
