BCCI mulls performance-based pay cuts for underperforming cricketers
What's the story
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is mulling a new initiative to make players financially accountable for poor performances in a series.
The proposal was discussed at the recent BCCI review meeting in Mumbai, attended by key figures including chief selector Ajit Agarkar, Test captain Rohit Sharma, and head coach Gautam Gambhir.
The proposed pay structure is based on a corporate-style appraisal system rewarding/penalizing players based on their series performances.

BCCI's new pay structure: A corporate-style appraisal system
The proposed pay structure by BCCI is inspired by a corporate-style appraisal system.
According to an Indian Express report, "It was one of the suggestions given that players should be held accountable and if their performance is deemed not fit as per expectations, they should face variable pay-cuts."
This initiative would ensure players are more responsible for their performances and value Test cricket.
Attitude check

The BCCI review meeting also discussed concerns over some players' commitment toward Test cricket.
A source revealed, "There was discussion whether the current players were a bit indifferent when India loses a Test match."
The discussion comes after India's recent poor show in Test cricket, where they lost six out of their last eight matches, at home and overseas.
Incentive system
BCCI's incentive system for red-ball cricket
In 2024, the BCCI introduced an incentive-based system to lure more players to red-ball cricket.
The system provides a bonus of ₹30 lakh per game if a player plays over 50% of the scheduled Test matches in a season. The amount increases to ₹45 lakh if participation increases to 75%.
The initiative was launched amid increasing interest in franchise-based T20 leagues across the globe.
