Paris Olympics: Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain loses in quarter-final
Boxer Lovlina Borgohain failed to assure India of its fourth medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Lovlina, the Tokyo Games bronze medalist, lost to China's Li Qian in the women's 75kg quarter-finals. The Indian boxer could have received at least the bronze medal by reaching the semis. Notably, Lovlina beat Norway's Sunniva Hofstad 5-0 to move into the last-eight stage.
Here's how the bout panned out
China's Li Qian beat Lovlina in the women's 75kg quarter-final by a 4-1 spilt verdict. Although Lovlina was solid with her jabs, the Chinese boxer the first round by a 3-2 split decision. Qian also won the second round 3-2, but Lovlina had hopes as four of the five judges were tied on points. The former outclassed Lovlina in the final round, winning 4-1.
Lovlina could have scripted history
At the Tokyo Olympics, Lovlina joined Mary Kom and Vijender Singh as the third Indian boxer with an Olympic medal. In 2008, Vijender became the first Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal (bronze). Mary claimed the bronze medal at the 2012 London Games in women's flyweight event. Lovlina could have become the first Indian boxer to win multiple medals at the Olympics.
Bronze for both losing semi-finalists
In boxing at the Olympic Games, both the losing semi-finalists receive two bronze medals. There is no separate bronze medal match in this regard. The winners of semi-finals then fight for the gold medal.
