Paris Olympics: Belgium triathlete hospitalized after swimming in River Seine
In a major development, the Belgium triathlon team withdrew from their mixed relay event in the River Seine scheduled for August 5. Claire Michel, a Belgian triathlete fell ill after competing in the event, which involves swimming, at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Michael was hospitalized with an E coli infection before being ruled out of the race. Here are further details.
The buzz around River Seine's water quality
River Seine has been a subject of concern due to its high pollution levels, leading to a swimming ban since 1923. Last month, the men's triathlon event at the Paris Olympics was deferred due to concerns over its water quality. Despite an investment exceeding $1.5 billion, heavy rainfall in Paris resulted in wastewater overflow from the city's antiquated sewage system into the Seine.
More on E coli infection contracted by Michel
Dr Nicole Iovine, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Florida Health in Gainesville, highlighted that heavy rains can lead to an influx of wildlife waste into the Seine. The primary concern is the high concentration of E coli bacteria in the river, which can cause severe illnesses such as gastrointestinal and urinary tract infections. Belgium's Michael was hospitlized after contracting this infection.
Statement from Belgian Olympic and Interfederal Committee
In a statement, the Belgian Olympic and Interfederal Committee said, "The BOIC and Belgian Triathlon hope that lessons will be learned for future triathlon competitions. We are thinking of training days that can be guaranteed, competition days and formats that are clear in advance." As per several reports, Swiss triathlete Adrien Briffod also fell ill following the men's individual event at River Seini.
River Seine host to several swimming events
River Seine is playing host to several Paris Games swimming events, including marathon swimming and other legs of the Olympic and Paralympic triathlons. The decision to hold triathlon and long-distance swimming events in the Seine for the Olympics catapulted these cleaning efforts to top priority.
