India's largest-ever Paralympic team gets grand send-off for Paris Games
India's largest-ever Paralympic contingent received a grand farewell today, ahead of the upcoming Paris Games. The event was organized by the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) and Sports Authority of India (SAI). The Indian team comprises 84 athletes who will compete in 12 different sports including archery, athletics, badminton, canoeing, cycling, blind judo, powerlifting, rowing, shooting swimming table tennis and taekwondo.
Flag-bearers and minister's message
Bhagyashree Jadhav and Sumit Antil have been chosen as India's flag-bearers for the Paris Paralympics 2024. This significant event marks a new high in India's Paralympic participation, with an increase from the 54 athletes who competed in Tokyo. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya praised the athletes' resilience and determination in preparing for the Games, stating that many have benefited from initiatives like Khelo India.
Government's commitment and PCI president's hopes
Mandaviya affirmed the government's commitment to provide necessary resources and support for these athletes. He expressed confidence that they will bring honor to India on this global platform. Devendra Jhajharia, President of PCI, echoed these sentiments, stating that he is immensely proud of the athletes' dedication and passion. He also expressed hope for another strong performance from India at the upcoming Paralympics.
Special anthem and book launch
The farewell event also featured the launch of a special anthem, "Macha Dhoom," composed by renowned music directors Vivek Abhishek. A commemorative book titled Breaking the Barriers was unveiled as well. Authored by Abhishek Dubey and Mahavir Rawat, this book celebrates the achievements and aspirations of the Indian Paralympic team.
