Pakistan-Bangladesh 2nd Test shifted from Karachi to Rawalpindi: Here's why
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced the 2nd Test match between Pakistan and Bangladesh will now be played in Rawalpindi. Initially scheduled to take place in Karachi, the venue has been changed due to ongoing construction work at the Karachi National Stadium. This decision was made after considering advice from construction experts about potential disruptions during play. The 2nd Test was earlier scheduled to be held in in Karachi behind closed doors (without spectators).
Renovations at Karachi National Stadium prompt venue change
The 1st Test of the series was always planned to be held in Rawalpindi on August 21. However, the 2nd Test was initially set for Karachi between August 30 and September 3. Due to renovations at the Karachi National Stadium for next year's ICC Champions Trophy, the PCB had earlier decided to exclude spectators from this match. Now, both matches will take place at the Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi.
PCB cites player disturbance as reason for venue shift
The PCB's decision to relocate the match was influenced by concerns that ongoing construction could disrupt players. "We have been guided by the construction experts on the timelines for the readiness of the venue," said a PCB spokesperson. The board also noted potential health risks from dust generated by construction work, which could affect not only players but also officials, broadcasters, and media personnel.
Future matches in Karachi remain uncertain
The PCB has not yet made any decisions regarding future matches scheduled to take place in Karachi. The city is set to host another Test between Pakistan and England from October 15-19. "At this stage, we will not like to speculate on the hosting of the second Test in Karachi from October 15-19," said a PCB spokesperson. The board plans to continue working closely with architects and construction experts for safe match hosting while keeping the England cricket board updated.
Pakistan set to host the 2025 Champions Trophy
Pakistan is due to host the 2025 Champions Trophy, the country's first ICC event since 1996. The nation last hosted the World Cup in 1996 along with India and Sri Lanka. Notably, Pakistan was refrained from hosting internationals for a decade after the 2009 terrorist attacks on Sri Lankan team.
