What's the story

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is facing criticism for reportedly failing to pay the salaries of its national team players for four months. This issue affects prominent cricketers like Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Afridi. The women's cricket team is also experiencing a similar delay in salary payments. A total of 25 senior men's cricketers were granted three-year contracts that began on July 1, 2023 and will end on June 30, 2026.

Payment delay

Contract review and unpaid salaries

According to Cricket Pakistan, these contracts are currently under review due to the team's disappointing performance. The report states, "Last year, prior to the World Cup, players pressured the board to secure a favorable contract, but the current situation has changed dramatically." It further reveals that players have not received their monthly salaries for four months from July to October despite several reminders.

Additional dues

Sponsorship payments also delayed

The report also highlights that sponsorship payments for the logo on players' shirts have been overdue for several months. This adds to the financial issues faced by the cricketers due to non-payment of salaries. The PCB has not yet provided a specific timeline or plan for resolving these delayed payments, leaving players in a state of uncertainty regarding their income.

Unpaid wages

Women's team also affected by salary delays

The women's cricket team players, who have been on a 23-month contract since August 21, 2023, are also awaiting their salaries for the past four months. Their contract was set to be reviewed after 12 months but this process is still ongoing. The PCB stated that "It is a work in progress. As soon as the lists are finalized and approved, contracts will be offered with effect from July 1, 2024."
