Pakistan and not Australia are number 1 team in T20Is
Australia's joy, at being the number one ranked T20I team, was short-lived as Cricket Australia's chief has clarified that Pakistan will retain the number one rank. ICC had made a clerical error which led to the confusion regarding the rankings. Despite Australia's thumping victory over New Zealand in the Trans-Tasman Tri-series, they missed out on the number 1 spot by 0.19 points.
Clerical error by ICC made Australia top ranked team
Earlier, Cricket Australia had claimed that David Warner's men will take the number one ranking, if they remained unbeaten and defeat New Zealand in the final of the Tri-series T20I tournament. Australia managed to do so with a 19-run victory over New Zealand and they expected to become the number 1 team. However, ICC had made a small clerical error while calculating the points.
Australia have never been the top ranked team
When the error was rectified and rating points were rounded off, Australia were placed second on 125.65, 0.19 points behind Pakistan. This means Australia will have to wait, before they can stake claim on the number 1 spot for the first time in their history.
