Pakistan-England Test series might be shifted due to construction delays
The upcoming Test series between Pakistan and England, initially scheduled for October, may be relocated to another country. As reported by The Express Tribune, the three-match series was set to take place in Multan on October 7, Karachi on October 15, and Rawalpindi on October 24. However, due to "incomplete preparation of cricket stadiums," there are now discussions about moving the matches either to the UAE or Sri Lanka.
Construction work underway for 2025 Champions Trophy
The Rawalpindi stadium, which recently hosted two Test matches of Pakistan's series against Bangladesh, is currently undergoing construction work. Similar preparations are also taking place in Lahore and Karachi. These efforts are part of a larger plan to ready the venues for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. The ongoing construction has raised concerns about the readiness of these stadiums for the forthcoming Test series with England.
UAE and Sri Lanka: Potential alternatives for Test series
Nations like UAE and Sri Lanka have been identified as potential alternative locations for the Test series. In the UAE, two venues in Dubai and Sharjah are already set to host the ICC Women's T20 World Cup between October 3 and 20. Additionally, Abu Dhabi has two venues that have previously hosted Test cricket, making it a viable option for hosting the entire series.
Sri Lanka's monsoon season may pose challenges
Sri Lanka is another potential alternative for the Test series, despite its monsoon season potentially posing challenges. However, the nation's ground staff have earned a reputation for their exceptional work in such conditions. This could make Sri Lanka a feasible option if the series cannot be held in Pakistan due to ongoing construction work at the cricket stadiums.
England's previous performance in Pakistan and potential host countries
England had previously swept the series 3-0 during their last tour in Pakistan. Since Test cricket returned to Pakistan in 2019, the hosts have won four and lost six games. However, between 2009 and 2019, they secured 15 victories and suffered eight losses in the UAE. In Sri Lanka, they beat the home team 2-0 in a series held in 2023.
