These two cricketing legends debuted this day, 28 years ago
Looking back at the past, today marks the special day when two of the cricketing greats made their debut - Sachin Tendulkar and Waqar Younis. The match was an India vs Pakistan Test on 15th November 1989, where a 16-year-old Sachin Tendulkar and an 18-year-old Waqar Younis played their maiden Test and the rest as they say is history.
Sachin's debut Test was not telecast in India
The test match in which Sachin made his debut was not telecast live on Doordarshan, the only channel that the yesteryear cricket fans were left at the mercy of, owing to 9th Lok Sabha elections coverage.
The debut where Sachin's wicket was picked up by Waqar
The debut was contrasting in experience for Sachin and Waqar. While Sachin who came to bat at number 5th position was bowled out at 15, his wicket was picked up by none other than Waqar Younis who scalped 4 wickets for 40 in 19 overs in the first innings. Sanjay Manjrekar, Manoj Prabhakar, and Kapil Dev were his other three victims.
Both legends in their own path
Sachin Tendulkar, and Waqar Younis, legends in their own right had contrasting retirements too. While the God of cricket with his last match in 2013, got the best farewell a player could ask for, the Pakistani pacer ended his career after being sacked as the team captain post 2003 World Cup campaign. Nonetheless, they both made their indelible mark in cricket history.
Sachin's runs and Waqar's wickets
Sachin in his 200 Tests and 463 ODIs amassed 15921 and 18426 runs respectively, most by any cricketer. Waqar Younis has 373 Test wickets and 416 ODI wickets to his credit.
