Seam-bowling all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai made history by becoming the first-ever player from Afghanistan to win the prestigious ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year award.
In 2024, Omarzai showcased his remarkable all-round abilities, finishing as Afghanistan's second-highest run-scorer in ODIs with 417 runs at an impressive average of 52.12.
Additionally, he proved his mettle with the ball, claiming 17 wickets in 14 matches, making him his country's second-highest wicket-taker in the format.

Omarzai hopes his achievement will inspire Afghan youth
Omarzai was elated to be the first cricketer from Afghanistan to bag this award and hopes it inspires the youth of Afghanistan.
"It is a matter of great happiness for me to become the first Afghan player to win the ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year award," he said according to IANS.
He added, "This will also be an inspiration for our youth and for future generations."

Omarzai praises Rashid Khan's record-breaking performance
Omarzai also lauded his teammate, Rashid Khan, for etching his name as the highest wicket-taker in T20 cricket.
Additionally, he also hoped that Rashid's record would remain unbroken.
"It is a matter of great happiness that a player emerges from Afghanistan who creates a world record," he said. "We hope that Rashid takes so many wickets that no one can break his record."

Omarzai confident about Afghanistan's debut in ICC Champions Trophy
As Afghanistan prepare for their maiden ICC Champions Trophy campaign, Omarzai expressed confidence in his team's abilities and strong sense of unity.
He said these have been the key to their success in the last two years.
"Afghanistan has a very good team, and the young players are doing well," he said. "Our goal is that we have to go and play and win."

Omarzai's journey in SA20 and his experience with Rashid Khan
Currently, Omarzai is a part of the MI Cape Town team, led by Rashid Khan in the SA20.
He said he was happy to be part of a team that has won five consecutive matches in a row to reach the final.
He also credited Rashid's leadership for boosting his confidence and giving him opportunities to learn.
"He gives a lot of confidence to the players," Omarzai said about Rashid.

Omarzai's series-defining performance against Bangladesh
Omarzai's most memorable performance came in the 3rd ODI against Bangladesh in Sharjah back in November 2024.
With the series at stake, he delivered an economical bowling spell and a death-overs masterclass.
He claimed 4/37 from 7 overs with the ball.
He then steered Afghanistan to victory with a solid batting display.
He struck the winning runs with a maximum to finish unbeaten on 70 off 77 balls. This performance sealed both the match and series for his team.
