Olympics: Decoding the medal leaders in women's gymnastics
USA gymnast Simone Biles has been enjoying a gala time in the ongoing 2024 Paris Olympics. She has claimed three medals so far, all golds. Biles has tasted glory in team, all-around, and vault. Her haul at the Paris Games has taken her overall Olympic medal tally to 10. Here we present the Olympic medal leaders in women's gymnastics.
Larisa Latynina -18 medals
Larisa Latynina represented Soviet Union in three Summer Games (1956, 1960, and 1964). She tallied a total of 18 medals which includes nine gold, five silver, and four bronze. Notably, Latynina claimed six medals apiece in each of her three campaigns. However, her best year in terms of gold medals was 1956 (4). Latynina owns three medals apiece in vault, all-round, and team events.
Vera Caslavska - 11 medals
Czechoslovakia's Vera Caslavska claimed 11 medals at the Summer Games (1960, 1964, and 1968). She tallied seven gold and four silver medals. Six of her medals came in the 1960 Mexico Games (4 golds). Notably, Caslavska scripted three medals in team events and two apiece in all-round, vault, and balance beam. Her other two medals were recorded in Uneven bars and Floor exercise.
Simone Biles - 10 medals
While Biles claimed three golds in Paris, her other four top-podium finishes in Olympics were registered in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro games. She also had a silver in the 2016 event while the 2020 Tokyo Games saw her claim a silver and a bronze. The USA gymnast has three medals in team events and two apiece in all-around, and vault, and balance team.
Agnes Keleti and Polina Astakhova - 10 medals
Hungary's Ágnes Keleti and Soviet Union's Polina Astakhova claimed 10 medals apiece. Both former gymnasts own five golds each. While Keleti has three silver and two bronze, Astakhova owns two silver and three bronze medals. Keleti claimed four and six medals in 1952 and 1956, respectively. Astakhova returned with two medals in 1956. She secured four medals each in 1960 and 1964.
