Abhinav Bindra misses bronze; Gagan Narang out
Playing his last Olympics, Abhinav Bindra was extremely close to winning the first medal for India but missed by 0.1 point. Bindra finished fourth in the men's 10m air rifle shooting event where Italy's Niccolo Campriani won gold. Gagan Narang did not qualify for the finals and was out in the qualification round itself.
India loses to Germany in the last few seconds
The Indian men's hockey team lost to Germany 2-1 after putting up a good fight. India played near perfect hockey but Christopher Ruhr of Germany scored the winning goal with just 3.1 seconds remaining in the game. Rupinder Pal Singh scored his third goal of the tournament by turning a penalty corner into a powerful goal. India will play Argentina next.
Great Britain thrash India 3-0
India's women's team could not do much in their match against Great Britain as they lost 3-0. Britain dominated in most of the match. India failed to convert any chances they got into a goal. India now have a draw and a loss in the tournament so far and are in the fourth position in their group. India will face Australia next on Wednesday.
Not a good day in Archery and swimming too
Indian archer Laxmirani Majhi lost in the women's individual archery event. She was defeated 1-7 by Slovakia's Alexandra Longova. Deepika Kumari and Bombayla Devi will be playing in the women's individual archery event. Indian swimmer Shivani Kataria, after finishing second in her heat of women's 200m freestyle, finished 41st overall. Sajan Prakash ended up 28th overall after finishing fourth in men's 200m butterfly heats.
Bindra wins hearts of billions
Abhinav Bindra missed a chance to win a medal for his country. However, he did not miss a chance to win India's hearts. Several tweets congratulating and thanking him were posted after the 33-year old shooter finished fourth.
US tops medals tally
United States' Ryan Murphy won the gold medal in the men's 100m backstroke event, taking US' medal tally to 19 with five gold, seven silver and seven bronze. Lillian King of the US won gold in the women's 100m breaststroke event. China's Sun Yang won gold in the men's 200m freestyle and took the tally of medals for China to 13.
Japan wins gold in men's team gymnastic
Japan beat Russia to clinch the gold in the men's team event in gymnastics. Defending champions China finished third. Japan's Shohei Ono won gold in the men's judo in the 161lbs category. So far, US and China have won five gold medals each. Australia won four, whereas Japan, Hungary and Italy have won three each.
