Wardrobe malfunction at Olympics: French ice skater suffers costume disaster
French ice dancer Gabriella Papadakis suffered what she calls her "worst nightmare", a wardrobe malfunction, on Monday while performing at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Papadakis, 22, had just begun her routine when a lift by her partner Guillaume Cizeron undid her dress, exposing her left breast. However, despite the misadventure, the couple continued valiantly with their act and finished second. Here's more.
Papadakis-Cizeron finish second after Canada's Tessa Virtue-Scott Moir
Though evidently exasperated, Papadakis didn't let the costume disaster affect her performance. Finishing it gracefully, she even waved at the crowd and judges before quitting the ice rink. Since costume and aesthetics are important components of figure skating, the French duo's score dipped down to 81.93 points. If not been for the mishap, they would have easily topped Canadian dancers Tessa Virtue-Scott Moir's 83.67.
My worst nightmare happened at the Olympics: Papadakis
"I felt it right away and I prayed. It was pretty distracting, kind of my worst nightmare. I told myself: 'I don't have a choice. I have to keep going.' I think we can be proud of ourselves being able to deliver a great performance", Papadakis said. "It's frustrating to miss a few points because of a costume issue," Cizeron told The Independent.
Costume designer feels 'terribly guilty'
Sophie Thomas, the designer behind all of the French pair's costumes in the last six years, says she feels "terribly guilty, even though it's not my fault". "I just can't explain it, it's a real mystery. The top was firmly attached. We just don't know why it came undone at that very moment. It's bad luck, there's just no rational explanation", she told AFP.
South Korea's Yura Min also suffered a wardrobe disaster
Papadakis's wasn't the only wardrobe malfunction on the ice at the Pyeongchang Games. On day three, South Korean skater Yura Min's dress came undone seconds into her performance. She had to readjust it multiple times while on the rink. Making light of it, she tweeted: "Despite the wardrobe malfunction, I had an amazing time! I promise to sew myself in for the individual event."
