Lou Vincent honored with 100th ODI cap after 17 years
Lou Vincent, a former New Zealand batter, has been honored with a special cap marking his 100th One Day International (ODI) match. The recognition comes nearly 17 years after he achieved this milestone in 2007. The presentation took place in Auckland at an intimate ceremony attended by Vincent's family and ex-teammates. Sir Richard Hadlee, a cricketing legend, presented the cap to Vincent.
Vincent reflects on special night and career acknowledgment
Vincent expressed his gratitude for the recognition of his cricketing career, describing the event as "a lovely way to be acknowledged." He further stated that it was a "really memorable, special night with some lovely words spoken." The former cricketer also used this occasion to express his appreciation for those who have supported him through both highs and lows of his journey.
Vincent's cricketing career and life ban
Vincent, who scored 2,413 runs in 102 ODIs, also participated in 23 Test matches and nine T20 Internationals between 2001 and 2007. Post his international career, he played in the now-defunct Indian Cricket League (ICL) and remained active on the domestic circuit until a lifetime ban was imposed by the England Cricket Board (ECB) for corruption in county cricket.
ECB revised lifetime ban, Vincent returns to domestic cricket
In December 2023, the ECB revised its lifetime ban on Vincent, allowing him to return to domestic cricket. Reflecting on this development, Vincent stated: "The past is the past." He expressed gratitude for the support he received during his appeal against the ban and acknowledged the ECB's respect for his behind-the-scenes efforts over recent years.
NZC CEO comments on Vincent's cap presentation
New Zealand Cricket (NZC) Chief Executive Scott Weenink revealed that the board had held onto Vincent's commemorative cap "for probably 13 years." He acknowledged Vincent's past mistakes but also praised his openness and efforts to combat match-fixing. Weenink stated, "When the opportunity came, it was really the least we could do to present him with his cap."
Vincent's 100th ODI and current involvement in cricket
Vincent's 100th ODI took place in Cape Town in December 2007, where he scored 18 runs and claimed his only ODI wicket by dismissing Jacques Kallis. Now at age 45, Vincent is gradually returning to cricket. He recently played for Seddon Cricket Club and participated in a five-day match aimed at raising awareness about men's mental health issues.
