New Zealand defeat England in 1st Test, here're records broken
What's the story
New Zealand claimed a victory by an innings and 49 run in the day and night Test against England at Auckland.
After bowling-out the visitors for a meagre score of 58 in the first innings, the Black Caps posted 427/8d, and in the second innings NZ wrapped up Root's side for 320.
Here is the list of records that were broken in this fixture.
Nightmare
England's debacle in the first innings
In the first innings, England were reeling at 27/9 but Overton saved the blushes with his 33-run knock.
Eventually, England were dismissed for 58.
England's lowest ever, post-war, Test score is 46. Five English players were dismissed on a duck.
This was England's worst Test total since they were bowled-out for 51 against the West Indies in 2009.
Pace Twins
Pacers do the trick for the Kiwis
New Zealand required just two bowlers to dismiss the entire England batting line-up in the first innings.
Tim Southee claimed 4/25, while his partner Trent Boult was more effective with a performance of 6/32.
The Kiwi pace duo had achieved a similar feat against Malaysia in 2008 U-19 World Cup, where Bolt claimed 7/20 and Southee 3/19.
Among the elite
Boult and Southee claim rare feat
In the last 25 years, two bowlers have claimed all the 10 wickets in a Test innings on just 5 occasions.
Ambrose and Walsh against England in 1994, Waqar and Akram against Sri Lanka in 1994, McGrath and Gillespie against the West Indies in 1999, Broad & Anderson against New Zealand in 2013 and Boult and Southee against England in 2018.
Data
Williamson is New Zealand's finest
Kane Williamson scored his 18th Test hundred in this match. With this ton, Williamson is ranked one in the list of most number of Test hundreds by a Kiwi batsman. The skipper eclipsed Ross Taylor's record of 17 Test hundreds.
Mauled at Auckland
Ben's resilience was not enough
In the second innings, England lost 3 wickets for 132.
But Ben Stokes scored a patient 66 off 188 balls and Chris Woakes helped him with a 52-run knock but that was not enough for the visitors to salvage a draw.
England now have a chance to level the two-match Test series, when they lock horns with the Kiwis in Christchurch on Friday.
