The 2018 Wimbledon final saw Serbian ace, Novak Djokovic, take home his 13th Grand Slam and 4th Wimbledon Open title. Djokovic rounded up affairs in the final against South African Kevin Anderson, with a score of 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3) in his favor. Djoker has achieved quite a few extraordinary milestones, in his illustrious career, and here we take a look at them.
A league of extraordinary gentlemen
His 4th Wimbledon title, yesterday, helped Djokovic become the player with the fourth highest Grand Slams in tennis history (13). He is only surpassed by Pete Sampras (14), his semi-final opponent Rafa Nadal (17) and Roger Federer (20). His win has also helped the Serbian reach the tenth position in world rankings after he entered the competition being the 21st.
Maintaining the form
As of July 2018, Djokovic has held the number 1 ATP rank for the longest time in 2010s. He has been numero uno for a staggering 223 weeks. Nadal trails behind him with a hold on the first rank for a period of 134 weeks.
Leading the way
In 2016, Djokovic achieved the unique feat, of becoming the eighth player in history, to achieve the Career Grand Slam. He also became the first player, since the great Rod Laver, to hold all the four major titles at once and the first ever to achieve it on 3 different surfaces. His 3 consecutive finals at each Grand Slam only adds to his glory.
Best of his country
Novak Djokovic is the first ever Serbian to be ranked number 1 and also the first Serbian male tennis player to win a singles Grand Slam title. Ana Ivanovic is his only fellow compatriot from Serbia, as she won the French Open in 2008.
Place among the all-time greats?
With six Australian, four Wimbledon, two US Open and one French Open, Novak Djokovic surely deserves a place among the all-time greats. Legends like McEnroe and Agassi have agreed that Djokovic's name can be mentioned in the same breath as Laver, Federer, Nadal or Sampras. With or without any other titles, fans would always remember him as one of the GOATs.
