Four years of Suresh Raina's international retirement: His notable records
India continue their quest for a middle-order core in white-ball cricket. There has been an influx of talented batters, but developing a nucleus has been challenging for the Indian selectors. In the late 2000s, Suresh Raina firmly held India's middle order in limited-overs cricket. His propensity to play clutch knocks under pressure stood out. August 15, 2024 marks four years of Raina's international retirement.
A look at his career stats
Raina falls among the most audacious white-ball batters India have produced. In an international career spanning nearly 12 years, the 37-year-old amassed 5,615 runs from 226 ODIs at an average of 35.31 (five tons and 36 half-centuries). He also played 18 Tests and 78 T20Is, having racked up 768 and 1,605 runs respectively. Raina is also known for his acrobatic fielding.
Century on Test debut
In 2010, Raina became the 12th Indian cricketer to slam a century on Test debut. He reached three figures in the 2nd Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo. Raina scored 120(228) in India's 707 after SL scored 642/4d. The match was eventually drawn. Raina became the second Indian with ton on Test debut in the 21st century, after Virender Sehwag (2001).
India's first-ever centurion in T20 WC
The 2010 ICC T20 World Cup saw Raina become the first-ever Indian batter to slam a ton in the tournament. Raina slammed a fiery 101(60) against South Africa in Gros Islet. His knock had 9 fours and 5 sixes. India posted 186/5 before restricting the Proteas side to 172/5. Notably, Raina was 23 years 156 days old at that time.
Century in all three formats
With his exploits in the Colombo Test, Raina became the first Indian to register a ton in all three formats. His maiden ODI ton came during the 2008 Asia Cup, against Hong Kong in Karachi.
