ICC Women's Player of the Month: Here are the nominations
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the nominees for the Women's Player of the Month award for August 2024. The shortlist includes Sri Lanka's rising star Harshitha Samarawickrama, and two consistent performers from Ireland, Orla Prendergast and Gaby Lewis. The nominations recognize their outstanding performances in international cricket throughout the month. Here are further details.
Samarawickrama's stellar performance against Ireland
Samarawickrama, a left-handed batter from Sri Lanka, has been nominated for her exceptional performances against Ireland in both ODI and T20I series. Following an unbeaten 69-run innings against India in July, she elevated her game in Dublin with unbeaten scores of 86 and 65 in two matches. She also shone in the three-match ODI series against Ireland, leading the run charts for both sides.
Prendergast's all-round skills earn nomination
Ireland's Orla Prendergast is another nominee for the ICC Women's Player of the Month award. Despite not matching Samarawickrama's run tally, Prendergast demonstrated her all-round skills with significant contributions in both batting and bowling. She scored 67 runs and took two wickets in two T20I matches against Sri Lanka. In the first ODI match, she restricted Sri Lanka to 260/8 with figures of 3/25 and two catches, before scoring an unbeaten century (122) off just 107 balls.
Lewis's record-breaking T20I score secures nomination
The third nominee for the ICC Women's Player of the Month award is Ireland's Gaby Lewis. She made her mark in August by scoring Ireland's highest individual score in T20I cricket. In the second T20I against Sri Lanka at Pembroke Cricket Club in Dublin, Lewis scored a remarkable 119 off just 75 balls. Her innings included 17 boundaries and two sixes, helping Ireland secure a series-levelling victory.
