
Revisiting NZ's performance in finals of ICC ODI tournaments
What's the story
The New Zealand cricket team has been brilliant in the ICC ODI tournaments over the years.
Despite not usually being among the outright favorites at the start of the events, the Kiwis have often made it to the semi-finals and finals.
While the ODI WC is widely hailed as the most prestigious ICC competition, the Champions Trophy is popularly known as the 'mini World Cup.'
Let's take a look at how NZ fared in the finals of ICC ODI competitions.

Glory in 2000 Champions Trophy
New Zealand beat the Indian team in the final of the 2000 Champions Trophy in Nairobi, Kenya.
Batting first, India posted 264/6 with captain Sourav Ganguly scoring 117 and Sachin Tendulkar contributing with 69 runs.
NZ bowlers made a terrific bounce back as India were once placed at 141/0.
The Black Caps later chased down the target with just two balls to spare, courtesy of Chris Cairns's unbeaten century (102*).
He rescued the Kiwis after they were reduced to 132/5.

Defeat to Australia in 2009 CT
In the 2009 CT final in Centurion, NZ took on Australia but could only manage 200/9 while batting first.
Martin Guptill (40) and Neil Broom (35) were the only Kiwi batters to score over 35. Nathan Hauritz took three wickets.
In reply, the Aussies lost two wickets inside the first three overs. However, centurion Shane Watson (105*) and Cameron White (62) rescued them with a 100-plus stand.
They (206/4) hence comfortably prevailed in 45.2 overs.

Another heartbreak vs Australia, 2015
The Aussies completely dominated New Zealand in the 2015 World Cup final in Melbourne with some exceptional bowling upfront.
The Kiwis folded for only a meager 183 in the big clash as James Faulkner and Mitchell Johnson dismissed three batters each.
Grant Elliott showcased remarkable resistance for the Kiwis, scoring an 82-ball 83.
Australia (186/3) won in just 33.2 overs as skipper Michael Clarke (74) and Steve Smith (56*) made fifties.

The controversial 2019 WC final
England and New Zealand played a cracking contest in the 2019 World Cup final at Lord's.
At the end of the innings, scores were tied and subsequently, the super over took place.
Batting first, NZ posted 241/8. England fought back to level the scores thanks to Ben Stokes's 84.
Though both teams scored 15 runs apiece in the Super Over, England controversially based on hitting more boundaries.
